Before defending the freedom and rights of his clients in the California court system, Mr. Cates served our country and fought for the Constitution as a United States Marine. He served his country as a U.S. Marine for six years and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Mr. Cates takes special pride in defending Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel.
Mr. Cates continues to defend the Constitution in every case as he defends individual’s rights in the criminal justice system. He invests his time, attention and expertise in every client as an individual, and represents them to the fullest. He goes above and beyond the duties of a criminal attorney to achieve for his clients the best results possible as quickly as possible. He is a hard working attorney who has earned the admiration of his colleagues, the immense gratitude of his clients, and the highly regarded respect of the courts.
As a criminal defense attorney, Mr. Cates has argued thousands of cases and is extremely well versed in the California court system and DMV hearing system. He has argued Appellate cases before the California Courts of Appeal and County Appellate Divisions. His efforts before the appellate courts have resulted in favorable changes in case law for all Californians, and has specifically changed the method in which the San Bernardino Crime Lab analyzes blood samples. Mr. Cates prides himself in keeping up to date in the state’s changing regulations and case law and constantly immerses himself in the news and trends of the legal defense world.
Mr. Cates earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Redlands and his Juris Doctorate from California Southern Law School.
Mr. Cates has been recognized for his efforts by the National Trial Lawyer’s Association as a Top 100 Trial Attorney and Top 40 Under 40 Trial Attorney. He has also received accolades from the National League of Renowned Attorneys, American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys, and recently he was named as a Top 100 DUI Attorney from the National Advocacy for DUI Defense.
Mr. Cates understands the importance and the need for justice. He believes in the need to defend the Constitution and now serves his community by passionately defending the Constitutional rights of his clients. He has dedicated his time to the community by participating in events through the Riverside and San Bernardino County Bar Associations, the State Bar of California, Legal Aid of San Bernardino, and the California DUI Lawyers Association.
